October 2005 Personal Branding Quick Tip

It’s Not About You!

We have focused a lot of our communications (Reach Branding Club Teleseminar, reachBEYOND!) during the past month on the topic of public speaking. My quick tip for this month continues on this theme.

People rank public speaking ahead of death in a list of fears. The reason many people are nervous about public speaking is that they build it up to be something colossal - they look at delivering a presentation as the career building or destroying event of the decade. They put so much pressure on themselves, it’s no wonder they are stressed!

Here’s the solution: Forget about you!

When you are delivering a presentation, think about the audience. Look at public speaking events as opportunities to serve your audience - to give them information, a break from their day, a new perspective, a little bit of inspiration, whatever.

If you focus on giving to your audience, you off-load a lot of pressure you have been putting on yourself and deliver a truly powerful presentation. So remember, when it comes to public speaking, it’s not about you!
